Waste disposal from A-Z

The residual waste garbage cans, organic waste garbage cans and waste paper garbage cans as well as registered bulky waste must be made available for emptying on the public sidewalk or at the edge of the public road by 7:00 a.m. at the latest (at the earliest from 6:00 p.m. the day before).

The lids of the waste containers must be closed. Overfilled containers will not be emptied. Strong pressing or ramming of the waste into the containers is not permitted. For reasons of occupational safety, the waste workers are not allowed to reach into the containers. Containers that are too heavy could also not be emptied, as they would then be damaged at the dumps.

The following maximum weights are to be observed according to the statutes:
40 l ton = 20 kg
60 l ton = 30 kg
80 l ton = 40 kg
120 l ton = 50 kg
240 l ton = 80 kg
660 l ton = 250 kg
770 l ton = 280 kg
1100 l ton = 380 kg

A bulky goods station is approached several times a day, as the recyclable materials waste wood and scrap metal as well as old electrical appliances have to be collected separately.

After emptying, the waste containers or uncollected (excluded bulky items) must be removed from the public street or sidewalk immediately.

A fee of € 7 per 100 liters is charged for small quantities of residual waste .
Gray municipal garbage bags. For a fee of €6, you can obtain80-liter gray municipal garbage bags for additional residual waste at the Central Building Yard, Auf dem Sand 31. Garbage bags are taken away on your residual waste collection day.

The registration and re-registration of the residual waste, organic waste and paper garbage cans, as well as the billing of fees, is carried out by the property owner at the Office for Financial Services of the City of Hilden.

Used glass bottles should be separated by color
and placed in the used glass containers:

The used glass collection does not include porcelain, ceramics, lead and crystal glass, drinking glasses, mirrors and window glass.

In the city of Hilden, Awista-Logistik-GmbH is responsible for emptying the glass containers. The Dual Systems are the clients within the scope of packaging collection.

You will find used glass containers for the disposal of non-returnable bottles and non-returnable glasses at the following locations.

Old electrical appliances, batteries, and rechargeable batteries do not belong in household trash—it is against the law. They contain valuable raw materials and can cause fires if disposed of improperly. By returning them:

• Protect valuable resources by returning them to the material cycle,
• help protect the environment because pollutants can be properly treated,
• Prevent fires in garbage trucks and waste disposal facilities.

We accept your old devices and batteries for free!

Look for the symbols shown above. They indicate that electrical appliances and batteries can be returned. Retailers are also required to accept returns free of charge under certain conditions:

• Electrical appliances:
  • Mandatory take-back program for retailers of electrical appliances with a sales area of 400 m² or more, and food retailers with a total sales area of 800 m² or more that offer such products several times a year or on a permanent basis:
    • Old devices up to 25 cm in any dimension, no purchase required, max. 3 per device type
    • When purchasing a new unit: An old unit of the same type with essentially the same functions
    • When purchasing a new item and having it delivered to your home: free return of the old device
  • Any retailer that has sold e-cigarettes or tobacco heating devices—either currently or within the last six months—must accept returns of these products.
  •   The same obligations apply to online retail; the key factors are warehouse and shipping space

• Batteries:
  • Every retailer is required to accept used device batteries and used low-voltage batteries from end users free of charge at their retail location or in the immediate vicinity, regardless of the batteries’ chemical composition, brand, origin, size, or condition.
    • A retailer is only required to accept the battery categories that it currently offers or has offered in the past
      • Device batteries weighing up to 5 kg
      • Batteries for light vehicles (used light-vehicle batteries) weighing up to 25 kg

Please be sure to note the following before submitting:

1. When returning computers, laptops, and other devices, please always make sure to delete your personal data. BSI - How to Securely Delete Data - Explained Step by Step
2. Remove batteries and rechargeable batteries from electrical appliances as soon as possible and return them separately. 
3. Remove light bulbs from electrical appliances as soon as possible and recycle them separately.
4. Before handing them over, cover the terminals of batteries and rechargeable batteries with a strip of tape—this prevents short circuits and, consequently, fires.

Note: Please hand in devices with built-in batteries separately to the staff.

The crossed-out wheeled garbage can symbol on electrical equipment, batteries and accumulators indicates that they should never be disposed of with household waste.

Special Regulations for Night Storage Heaters and Solar Panels:

Strict occupational safety regulations apply to the disposal of night-storage heaters and solar panels . Proper dismantling and packaging are therefore essential. Warning: Illegal disposal!

Disposing of electronic waste through collectors at your home’s front door—with the exception of municipal bulky waste collection—is illegal. Electrical appliances may only be collected by municipal collection points, retailers subject to take-back obligations, manufacturers, and certified primary treatment facilities.

One reason for illegal collection is the profitable dismantling of the devices, as they often contain expensive raw materials such as precious metals. Copper in cables, gold, silver, and palladium on circuit boards, and many other raw materials can be extracted and sold with relative ease. The remaining parts of the devices have no value to the collectors. If devices are dismantled illegally, this can have massive consequences for the environment and human health. The legally required initial treatment follows a set sequence in which components and liquids containing hazardous substances are removed before further recycling. If these steps are skipped, various hazardous substances can be released into the environment via soil, water, and air. This has negative effects on the environment, animals, and people.

If you notice any suspicious collectors—for example, on the eve of bulk trash pickup—you can notify the Public Order Office or the police.

If your device is broken but you’d like to keep using it, it’s worth checking out repair services—there’s even a “Repair Meetup” in Hilden. Commercial enterprises with hazardous and pollutant-containing waste are required to connect to and use the IDR EG interim hazardous waste storage facility in Düsseldorf Reisholz.

Waste containing harmful substances are e.g. :
Paints, varnishes, solvents, acids, alkalis, wood preservatives and impregnating agents, pesticides, photographic chemicals, descaling agents, rust removers, sanitary cleaners, fluorescent tubes, energy-saving lamps, capacitors, mercury thermometers, spray cans that have not been emptied, old medicines, batteries, etc.

For capacity reasons, only small household quantities from private households in Hilden are accepted at the mobile hazardous waste unit.

Rechargeable batteries, batteries, energy-saving lamps, fluorescent tubes and LED lamps
can also be handed in daily at the building yard during the times when recyclables are accepted.

If a fluorescent or energy-saving lamp breaks, the affected room should first be well ventilated for 15 minutes. After that, the lamp remains should be carefully swept up and taken to the hazardous waste collection in a sealed container. Please do not use a vacuum cleaner to remove the remains.

Where to put used batteries, used oil and used electrical appliances

Attention to waste oil disposal :

Every dealer who sells motor oil is obliged to take back used oil in the quantity purchased from him in or at the point of sale.


Tip: Keep the receipt when you buy new and stick it on the used oil canister when you hand it in at the store.

Bulky goods can only be requested online. You will receive confirmation of your appointment by email. When you register, please let us know what you would like to have collected so that electronic waste and other recyclable items can be loaded separately.

Two free registrations per household per year are included in the waste fee. In addition, a fee of 20 euros is charged for each additional bulky goods registration. This bulky goods registration must be applied for and paid for in person at the central building yard.

Bulky goods express

If you are in a hurry, you can have your bulky goods collected with the bulky goods express service (within three working days) for a fee of 60 euros. The application and payment is only possible in person at the central building yard. For further information, please call 02103 / 72-1723.

Rule of thumb: Bulky waste only includes items that you would normally take with you when moving.
Therefore, please only place bulky movable household items, furniture and household appliances that do not fit in the residual waste garbage can because of their size and volume with the bulky waste.

How must bulky waste be made available for collection?
Registered bulky waste up to a maximum of 3 m³ must be made available on the day of collection by 7:00 a.m. at the edge of the public road or on the sidewalk in a clearly visible and easily accessible manner. If this is not possible in terms of time, the waste is to be made available in a traffic-safe, non-obstructive manner from 6:00 p.m. of the previous day at the earliest.
In very narrow residential streets without sidewalks, the bulky waste may exceptionally be placed on private property (garage entrance or front yard) in such a way that the waste collectors can reach the bulky waste directly from the public sidewalk (without fences, walls).
Waste wood, scrap metal and bulky electrical appliances are collected by separate vehicles and should therefore be placed separately from bulky waste.

The applicant is responsible for the bulky item site (no traffic hazards, removal without obstacles and loss of time) until it is collected. If possible, make sure that the bulky item site is not rummaged through or that no items are placed there.
Items that are not taken along (excluded) as well as excess quantities must be cleared away from the public traffic area by nightfall or can only be removed after payment of an additional fee of € 20 per 2 m³ of additional bulky item.

At or after events and festivals in public street areas, the organizer is always responsible for proper waste disposal and cleaning of the event areas.

The Central Construction Yard offers various services in this regard, ranging from the provision and collection of waste containers to the cleaning of the affected areas with sweepers.

You can obtain gray garbage bags for additional residual waste for a fee of 6 euros at the central building yard, Auf dem Sand 31. The municipal garbage bags are taken along on your residual waste collection day.

You can purchase leaf bags in the fall for 1 euro each at the Central Construction Yard. The bags, which are intended exclusively for leaves, are then collected from October to December on the respective organic waste collection days.
