Art and Medicine III

The successful exhibition format "Art and Medicine" is entering its third round, as the Wilhelm Fabry Museum's collection has grown once again. The renowned physician, medical and art historian Prof. Dr. med. Axel Hinrich Murken has donated another part of his extensive art collection with a focus on the history of medicine to the Wilhelm Fabry Museum.

The Wilhelm Fabry Museum, named after the founder of modern surgery in Germany, has historical books on medicine, surgical instruments, prints and paintings on the subject of art and medicine in its collection. The new additions, which include magazines, posters, prints and paintings, complete the view of the history of medicine and art.

One focus of the exhibition this time is the life and work of Robert Koch, who went from country doctor to Nobel Prize winner. Prof. Murken recently published a book on this subject.

In addition to the aspects of the medical theory of infection, the development of the hospital system and a look inside the human being, it is also about faith, the placebo effect, meditation and the fluid that helps people to get back on their feet.

New research findings on individual exhibits in the collection will also be presented, focusing on the diversity and interfaces between art and medicine. For example, visitors can find out more about the background to the painting "The Hope of Spring" by Rudolf Eichstaedt and the painting "The Widow's Sacrifice" by E.L. Dubufe. The research work is sometimes more exciting than a detective story.

Every picture, every object tells a complex story or opens another chapter in the history of medicine. These stories and scientific findings are presented in the exhibition "Art and Medicine III".
