Hilden Town Hall Talks on Europe: Trump 2.0—How Will the U.S. President’s Tariffs Affect Our Economy?
With his punitive tariffs, Donald Trump not only challenged decades-old principles of free trade, but also triggered an international conflict whose consequences are still being felt today. Was it a one-time aberration, a risky gamble with the global economy, or perhaps both?
This lecture examines U.S. tariff policy under Trump as an expression of a fundamental paradigm shift: away from multilateral cooperation and toward a policy focused on national interests. What goals was the U.S. government actually pursuing? Who are the winners and losers of this strategy—in the U.S., in Europe, and worldwide? And is the European Union facing the challenge of redefining its own role in economic policy?
Savas Poyraz is an expert at the Düsseldorf Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) on customs and foreign trade policy as well as commercial law.
