"Christmas Eve"
Play by Daniel Kehlmann
For the second time, the Cultural Affairs Office is hosting a theater performance in the Heinrich-Strangmeier Hall at the Altes Helmholtz Culture and Continuing Education Center, and once again, the déja-vù ensemble from Bonn is visiting Hilden with an exciting production.
About the content:
A table, two chairs, a state security agent (Thomas), a philosophy professor suspected of terrorism (Judith), and the clock ticking. On her way to visit her parents on Christmas Eve, Judith is arrested. As a philosopher, she has reflected on violence as a form of social protest. She is accused of planning a terrorist attack together with her ex-husband. Thomas, the interrogation specialist, has exactly 90 minutes to find out whether there is a bomb and whether it will actually explode at midnight.
Contrary to what the title might suggest, this is not a contemplative Christmas play, but rather a suspenseful, highly political interrogation with a touch of *High Noon* set at night. Through clever dialogue, Kehlmann’s 2017 play explores the dilemma between the opposing yet understandable stances of two people who engage in a fierce duel under the (real?) pressure of a ticking time bomb. The play highlights not only the tension between freedom and security, but also its root cause: the unjust distribution of resources in the world.
Tickets priced at €20.00 (with seat selection) will be available starting November 10 at the Cultural Affairs Office, 4th floor of City Hall, Room 414 (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings) or Room 418 (Thursday afternoons).
